New/Former Client Current ClientMeet our team of doctoral level providers dedicated to providing you with the best quality care to help you on your journey toward improved well-being.
New/Former Client Current ClientAs a leader in the mental health field, Dr. Paquin left the large healthcare systems to develop a clinic dedicated to making quality psychological care available to people seeking help. Psychology Express was established in 2017 (pre-COVID) dedicated to expanding the reach of quality mental health services via the use of telehealth.
Post-COVID, as telehealth has become the norm, Psychology Express has focused on recruiting the best psychologists to provide the highest level of mental health care in MN and the U.S.
Finally, our history would be incomplete without mention of Maria Almanzar, the Director of Operations. Dr. Paquin and Maria previously spent years leading a large hospital-based system and built what was arguably the most successful psychology program at the time in the state. In 2022, Maria and Dr. Paquin partnered again with the vision of delivering the highest quality of care (using doctoral level psychologists) to care for clients throughout MN, WI, and the U.S.

Hello! I am delighted to introduce myself as the newest member here at Psychology Express. I have pursued my passion for understanding the human mind and behavior by obtaining a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Mid-America Christian University. Upon completion, I began working as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the community and at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
While at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, I decided to pursue a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Oklahoma City University and subsequently returned to The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to complete my doctoral training. As a clinician, I believe in creating a safe and non-judgmental space for clients where they can freely express their thoughts and feelings. My primary theory is much aligned with Person-Centered Therapy with an aim to allow individuals to lead a more authentic and genuine lifestyle.

Seeking out therapy is often an intimidating undertaking. Whether you are new to therapy or coming back after a break, sharing your history with a new person can be emotionally difficult. It is common for people to be uncomfortable talking about challenges in their lives, and even having experience with therapy previously, hesitant to invite new people to help them with these difficulties. I want to commend you for making it this far and caring enough about your well-being to seek out some assistance. The more people we can enlist to be with us, and the better we get at enlisting people the easier these challenges become.
If I work with you, I hope to do two things. First, I want to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you. Harsh criticism or judgment is rarely beneficial, especially in our world where there is no shortage of people telling you what you are doing wrong. Second, to make sure the space is safe and understanding, I want to get to know you as well as possible. This means understanding what brings you into therapy now, and getting to know how relationships, traumas, or experiences within society might influence their mental health. Understanding these things is only the beginning. The work in therapy is done when we can meet on a regular basis and understand how these previous experiences might be driving some of your daily difficulties.
For this reason, I usually like to see people once per week for a 50-minute session. I feel like this level of frequency is necessary to build rapport and help me get to know you better. In my experience, monthly or bi-monthly meetings often become “catch-up” sessions. Their infrequency can make it difficult to build on what might have been discussed in the last session.
I am originally from Houston, but I earned my PhD from the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan, and completed my internship at the Indian Health Care Resource Center in Tulsa, OK.
I have experience working with teens and adults of all ages with general anxiety, social anxiety, school and work difficulties, and depression. I am happy to work with people from all economic, racial, sexual, and gender backgrounds, and I always try to keep in mind that people with similar backgrounds can have vastly different experiences.

I believe that an authentic, honest relationship is foundational to making therapy and assessment a meaningful experience. I strive to take an affirming, holistic, and collaborative approach in my work and to provide a safe, empowering experience in which being seen and accepted provides the foundation for growth and change. I work with adults facing a variety of experiences and challenges, including mood and anxiety concerns, obsessive compulsive disorder, overcoming the impacts of trauma, relational conflicts, family of origin issues, life transitions, grief, and shame. I received my Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, MN, and completed my Predoctoral internship at The University of Idaho Counseling and Testing Center in Moscow, Idaho. My professional interests include identity development, therapeutic assessment, and training and supervision, as well as culturally responsive emotion focused therapy.

PHD | LP Clinical Psychologist
My goal as a therapist is to genuinely connect with and support clients in their journey. It is a privilege to walk with others on their path towards healing and knowing themselves. I strive to make sure my clients feel seen and heard as their true selves, experience warmth and security in the counseling room, and know that I unconditionally accept them. I believe therapy should be a true partnership between myself and my client; we are a team working toward your desired healing, growth, and change. I am committed to providing a safe and inviting atmosphere for all people, identities, and needs.
I often work from a relational lens as I believe that our past and current interpersonal experiences have a significant influence in shaping how we see ourselves and the world, and are often at the root of a lot of our pain and distress. I believe that there is no “one size fits all” approach to therapy and enjoy being flexible and adaptable in my work. The experience of providing clients with a meaningful connection where they feel secure, heard, and accepted for their true selves is the aspect of this work that I find most fulfilling. Being able to give a client with past interpersonal hurts a corrective emotional experience and show them that they can be cared for unconditionally is a privilege, as is helping them to better understand the impact of their current/past experiences on their current challenges, sense of self, symptoms, and overall mental well-being. I also find it important to help clients build a toolbox of coping strategies to help them navigate their daily challenges, and so I incorporate breathing strategies, mindfulness, self-compassion, grounding, and EMDR emotion regulation strategies into my therapy work. Throughout all my work I remain aware of the context of each client’s unique experience as well as our diverse identities and how they may play out in sessions and within the client’s life, and work to foster open discussion, transparency, and exploration.
I hope to empower my clients by co-creating a therapeutic path that feels most meaningful for them. I feel especially capable to work with trauma, anxiety, relationship concerns, perfectionism, and disordered eating and body image concerns. If you feel that I would be a good fit for you as a therapist, I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.

Dr. Emily P. Sander is a licensed clinical psychologist dedicated to providing compassionate, person-centered mental health care to individuals of all ages. Dr. Sander utilizes an integrative approach to psychotherapy, pulling from a variety of therapeutic styles to meet the individual needs of each client, couple, or family. While she employs evidence-based treatments including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive behavioral (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and dialectical behavioral (DBT) therapies, approaches are not limited to these alone. Dr. Sander strongly believes that treatment must be tailored to each client’s needs and with a respect for the diverse backgrounds and life experiences of each individual.
Dr. Sander is particularly passionate about the treatment of trauma and helping those who have faced traumatic experiences restore a sense of safety and wellbeing in their lives. This includes treatment of PTSD, complex PTSD, and attachment trauma using EMDR therapy as the foundation for healing. Additionally, EMDR therapy can be a powerful tool in addressing other mental health concerns that have roots in painful past experiences, such as symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, phobias, and chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Dr. Sander is also trained in animal assisted psychotherapy and is in the process of developing a novel animal assisted trauma therapy intervention where animal co-therapists work alongside the provider as supports for healing.
For those seeking more rapid resolution to traumatic experiences Dr. Sander provides EMDR Intensive Treatment. EMDR Intensive Treatment is ideal for those who want to make a significant amount of progress in a much shorter timeframe. While EMDR therapy delivered in a traditional, weekly therapy format is highly effective, it may require several treatment sessions over weeks or months to achieve treatment goals. Intensive treatment offers the chance for more rapid resolution of trauma on a condensed schedule. Visit our EMDR Intensive Treatment page for more information.
In addition to therapy work, Dr. Sander is skilled in the completion of psychological and psycho-educational assessment. In particular, Dr. Sander specializes in neurodiversity focused psychological evaluations including the assessment of autism in adolescents and adults, ADHD across the age spectrum, and learning disabilities.
